How Do I Make Contact Form Errors Easier to Fix?
Write contact-form errors that identify the problem, preserve valid entries and help keyboard and screen-reader users complete the enquiry.

Part of our guide: What Is Website Accessibility?
A useful form error tells someone what went wrong and how to correct it without making them start again. “Invalid input” may be technically accurate, but it rarely provides enough help to complete an enquiry.
Treat error recovery as part of the form’s normal design. Real customers mistype addresses, overlook fields and use formats the designer did not anticipate.
Describe the specific problem
Replace vague messages with clear instructions linked to the relevant field. For example, “Enter an email address in the form [email protected]” is more actionable than “Error 12”.
Use reserved example details, not a real customer’s address. Do not display sensitive submitted information unnecessarily inside an error summary.
Distinguish a missing value from a rejected format and from a temporary service problem. They require different corrective actions.
Keep valid work intact
If one field is wrong, preserve the other legitimate entries where it is safe to do so. Requiring someone to retype a detailed project description after one typo creates avoidable effort.
For an illustrative decorating enquiry, the customer may have explained access restrictions and preferred dates before missing the email field. Preserve that work while directing attention to the correction.
The form-abandonment guide covers the broader journey. This article focuses on what happens after validation finds a problem.
Connect messages to their fields
W3C’s form-notification tutorial describes clear error feedback, including summaries and associations with the relevant controls.
Ask the developer to make errors available to assistive technology, not only visible as red text. A colour change alone does not explain the problem.
For longer forms, an error summary can help users locate the affected fields. Test its links and focus behaviour rather than assuming a visually attractive alert is sufficient.
Write and test the main failure cases
| Test case | Expected help |
|---|---|
| Required field empty | Identify the missing information |
| Address format rejected | Explain the accepted format |
| Message too long | Explain the limit without losing the text |
| Submission service unavailable | Say the enquiry was not confirmed |
| Successful submission | Confirm receipt only when supported by the system |
Do not use a success message as a fallback for an unavailable email service. Submission, storage and delivery can be separate events.
The WordPress email-delivery guide explains that distinction where WordPress is involved.
Avoid unnecessarily strict validation
Names, phone numbers and addresses vary. Do not reject a legitimate customer simply because their details differ from the designer’s examples.
Ask whether each restriction is actually needed by the receiving business process. If an exact format is necessary, explain it before the person submits.
Use helpful input types and instructions, but also validate safely on the server. A friendly browser message is not a security boundary.
Test error correction without a mouse
Complete the form using a keyboard, deliberately introduce one harmless mistake, then fix it. Can you find the error, reach the field and continue without losing your place?
Use the keyboard-testing guide for a practical first check, and include screen-reader evaluation in a wider review.
Also test on a phone with the virtual keyboard open. An error hidden behind a fixed banner can be technically present yet difficult to act on.
Record completion honestly
Keep the tested cases, browsers and outcomes in the maintenance record. A single successful submission does not prove error handling works.
