Are FAQ Pages Still Useful in the Age of AI Search?

Use FAQs to answer real customer questions in context, without relying on outdated rich-result promises or treating question formatting as an AI-search shortcut.

FAQ content is still useful when it answers genuine customer questions clearly. Its value does not depend on a special search-result format or a promise that an AI system will quote it.

The best place for an answer is often the service page where the question arises. A separate FAQ page is useful when it organises broader questions without forcing visitors away from the task they are completing.

Start with questions customers actually ask

Collect enquiries about suitability, cost, timing, preparation and what happens next. Keep the wording natural and remove personal details from research notes.

Do not invent a long list of questions simply to repeat keywords. Each answer should resolve a recognisable uncertainty.

The continuous improvement guide helps connect this work to recurring customer needs.

Put specific answers beside the service

A question about installation preparation belongs near the installation information. A general question about the company’s contact process may belong in a shared help section.

The business-information checklist can reveal answers that should already be visible rather than hidden inside an accordion.

Use headings and links that make the information easy to find.

Give a direct answer with conditions

Begin with the useful answer, then explain important limits or exceptions. Avoid a vague “it depends” followed by a sales pitch.

A practical response might state that a survey is normally needed, explain why and tell the reader how to arrange one. Link to deeper detail where the question needs more than a concise answer.

Keep examples accurate and do not imply that one customer’s result is guaranteed.

Do not rely on outdated FAQ rich-result advice

Google’s documentation changelog records that FAQ rich results stopped appearing in Search from 7 May 2026 and that the documentation was removed in June.

Do not commission FAQ content on the promise that adding FAQ markup will produce those expanded results. The customer answer can still be valuable without that feature.

The structured-data guide explains the broader role of describing visible content accurately.

Keep AI-search expectations realistic

Clear answers may be easier for people and automated systems to interpret, but formatting a sentence as a question does not guarantee an AI citation.

The AI-search guide and citation-selection guide discuss the wider importance of accessible, reliable information.

Provide original evidence and useful context rather than creating many interchangeable answers designed only for extraction.

Avoid duplicate answer libraries

If the same question appears on several pages, decide where the full answer belongs and link to it where appropriate.

The update and consolidation guide helps resolve older FAQ collections. Small context-specific summaries can be useful, but conflicting copies become difficult to maintain.

Do not create a separate thin URL for every minor variation of a question.

Make the interaction accessible

If answers collapse, use controls that work with a keyboard and assistive technology. Keep labels descriptive and ensure the content can be reached reliably.

For a small set of answers, ordinary visible sections may be simpler than an elaborate accordion.

Review the answers when the service changes

Assign ownership for prices, timescales and policy-related answers. Content decay can affect an FAQ even when it still receives visits.

Record new questions from staff and customers, then improve the relevant page rather than endlessly extending a generic list.
