What Is AI Search Optimisation?
AI search optimisation makes useful website information accessible, clear, well supported and easy to retrieve. It is an extension of good SEO, not a secret replacement for it.

Part of our guide: AI Search for Small Businesses: How to Stay Visible Beyond Traditional Google Results
AI search optimisation means making accurate, useful website information accessible to search and retrieval systems that help generate answers. It overlaps with ordinary SEO and content quality. The label does not describe a guaranteed method for getting an AI citation.
This page defines the term and its limits. For a practical programme of work, use AI search for small businesses.
How does it differ from ordinary SEO?
A conventional search experience often helps someone choose a page. An AI-assisted experience may assemble an answer using multiple sources and provide links for further reading. Both depend on finding and interpreting useful information.
| Term | Useful interpretation | What it does not promise |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Help search systems discover and understand relevant pages | A particular ranking |
| AI search optimisation | Make facts, explanations and evidence useful to retrieval and generated answers | Inclusion in every answer or a stable citation position |
| AEO or GEO | Labels often used for related answer and generative-search work | A separate universal technical standard |
The SEO, AEO and GEO comparison explains the terminology in more detail. Ask a supplier which concrete work they will perform, how it helps a customer and what they can actually measure.
What does Google require?
Google says its existing SEO practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet. It does not require a special AI text file or dedicated AI schema. See Google’s AI features documentation.
Those statements describe Google’s features. Other services have their own access and retrieval arrangements; do not assume one file or setting controls them all.

What makes information useful to retrieve?
A service page should state the actual offer, audience, coverage, process and limitations in readable text. Claims need evidence. A detailed explanation with an authorised example gives both readers and retrieval systems more useful information than a vague promise of excellence.
Clear headings and contextual links help readers move from the broad answer to the detail. See whether AI tools can read a business website for access considerations, and what schema can contribute for the limits of structured data.
What should you be sceptical about?
Be cautious of guaranteed citations, invented authority scores and instructions to repeat phrases until a tool gives a favourable result. A citation seen in one test is not proof that every customer receives the same answer.
Read how AI search tools choose sources before treating a supplier’s explanation of selection as an established formula. Preserve human-readable language and avoid creating duplicate pages solely for machines.
What is the next step for a small business?
Confirm that the main service pages can be reached and understood. Then identify missing facts, unsupported claims and customer questions that deserve a better answer. Use the small-business AI visibility action guide to plan the work and the SEO beginner’s guide for the underlying search checks.
Measure relevant visits and useful enquiries where possible. Treat mentions and citations as observations with context, rather than a substitute for business outcomes.
