WordPress.com or WordPress.org: What Is the Difference for a Business?
Compare WordPress.com with self-hosted WordPress by looking at hosting, plugins, maintenance, costs and the responsibilities your business will retain.

Part of our guide: WordPress Alternatives: What Is the Best Platform for a Business Website?
WordPress.com is a hosted service built around WordPress. WordPress.org is the home of the open-source software that you can use with a separate hosting provider.
The names describe different arrangements, not simply a professional version and a basic version. For a business, the important comparison is what the chosen service includes and who handles the work it leaves to you.
Separate software from hosting
WordPress is a content management system. Hosting is the service that makes the site available. Our CMS guide explains that distinction.
WordPress.com’s official comparison, checked on 3 October 2026, confirms that its service includes hosting while a self-hosted setup uses a separate provider. The document is a vendor source, so its promotional claims should not be treated as an independent performance comparison.
A self-hosted site can still have managed support. “Self-hosted” does not necessarily mean the business owner personally maintains the server.
Check what each service includes
| Decision | WordPress.com | WordPress with another host |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | Included in the service | Chosen separately |
| Platform options | Depend on the current plan and policies | Depend on host, software and support arrangement |
| Maintenance agreement | Check included service and exclusions | Agree with host or maintainer |
| Extra features | Check exact extension and plan compatibility | Check extension, hosting and licence compatibility |
| Business ownership | Retain account and recovery control | Retain account and recovery control |
Treat this as a procurement worksheet. Ask for written answers about the exact package, not a generic promise that one arrangement handles everything.
Recheck older advice about plugins
Product restrictions change. On the same review date, WordPress.com’s documentation says plugins can be installed on any paid plan, subject to its policies.
Do not rely on an older comparison claiming that every WordPress.com site is unable to use plugins. Equally, do not assume every extension is compatible or permitted.
List the actual booking, form, commerce or membership functions you need. Ask for confirmation of each one before paying or migrating.
Compare the full ongoing commitment
Include the domain, service subscription or hosting, premium extensions, support, backups where separately charged and migration work.
Check renewal terms and the cost of the required features. A free software download does not mean the complete business website is free to operate.
Our ongoing-cost guide helps organise those items without inventing a universal price. Keep the comparison dated because plans and packaging can change.
Test the everyday editing work
Ask the person who will maintain content to update a service description, replace a photograph and preview a mobile page.
Use the same content and tasks in each shortlisted arrangement. Record where assistance was needed and whether the result remained consistent.
A developer’s confidence with one system does not automatically tell you how easily your office team will handle routine changes.
Ask what moving later would involve
Check which content, media, configuration and functionality can be transferred. An export may not recreate the complete design or every integration without additional work.
The vendor lock-in guide helps distinguish manageable dependencies from surprises. Ask who supplies the handover, which licences transfer and what support is available during a move.
Keep an independent record of important business content and account ownership whichever arrangement you choose.
Choose around your operating model
If you want a bundled hosting relationship, assess the hosted service against the actual requirements. If choosing your own host and technical setup matters, assess a self-hosted arrangement and its support plan.
Neither route removes the need for accurate content, working enquiries and accountable maintenance. Our WordPress suitability guide puts those responsibilities in context.
For a wider decision, compare WordPress, Wix and Squarespace or the broader platform alternatives. Choose the arrangement your business can operate reliably.
