Website redirect map worksheet
Plan changed URLs and record the response and destination you need to verify before and after a move.
Use this when public URLs change. It is a planning and test record, not server configuration. A developer should implement and verify the agreed rules on the actual hosting platform.
How to use it
- Gather old URLs from the site, sitemaps and available search or link records.
- Keep a working address unchanged where practical. Map a moved page to its closest relevant replacement.
- Test the old response, final destination, content relevance and internal links before considering the row complete.
A completed example
This example is fictional and illustrates decisions to record. It is not a client case study or a claim about results.
On a narrow screen, scroll across the table to read every column.
| Old URL | Decision and destination | Expected behaviour | Verification |
|---|---|---|---|
| /garden-maintenance/ | Keep the same address. | 200 with the intended page; no unnecessary redirect. | Check canonical and internal links use this address. |
| /services/lawn-mowing/ | Move to /services/lawn-care/ only if it answers the same need. | One permanent redirect to a relevant page returning 200. | Record the actual response and check destination content. |
| /expired-offer/ | No relevant replacement after review. | Appropriate 404 or 410, not a redirect to an unrelated homepage. | Check incoming links and provide a useful not-found page. |
Your worksheet
Edit the fields below, then copy or print your completed version. Edits stay in this tab and are not sent to AfterWorks or saved after you leave. The download is always the blank template. Keep passwords and personal customer information out.
Before you call it complete
- Destinations are relevant, not simply the homepage.
- No redirect loop, unnecessary chain or destination error remains.
- Useful original URLs stay unchanged when possible.
- Old internal links and sitemap entries are updated.
- A sample is retested publicly after the authorised launch.
